D2, V2 & MGP Covered Eye Splice

  1. Cut off heat sealed end. Tie knot 3 meters from end. Slide outer cover back 16cm to expose the core.
  2. Measure 30cm from end of cover and mark 'A'. Form eye size and mark 'B' on standing part of rope. Open cover at 'A' with a fid and take out core, marking it 'C' at hole. Taper core over approx. 20cm from 'C', removing 6 individual strands.
  3. Open cover at 'B', and mark inner core 'D'. Pull core from standing part of rope into a loop equal in length to core tail (approx. 46cm).
  4. Insert large needle into core at end of loop, bringing eye out at 'D'. Thread core tail into needle and pull back out.
  5. Mark 'C' should meet with 'D' and tail should disappear inside core loop.
  6. Slide outer cover back over splice until the core section slips back inside.
  7. Thin outer cover tail (on the underside) using a fid to remove 4 plaits approx. 3 cm from neck of splice. Milk remaining slack into area approx. 25.5cm below neck of splice. Insert needle 20cm from neck of splice and bring out at neck. Thread outer cover into needle. Put eye of splice over fixed pin and pull needle out.
  8. Cut off protruding yarns. If thimble is required, insert while eye is being formed, before ends are pulled tight.

D2 & V2 Taper

  1. Decide where you would like to taper the rope and lock stitch the cover to the core using some whipping twine
  2. Measure 30cm down from the lock stitch and bunch up the cover of the rope. Then cut across the rope from one of the markers until this marker appears again taking care not to cut the core. The cover will open up and you can discard the cover you do not want.
  3. Take a splicing fid and pick out the plaits of the rope 1cm down from the lock stitch until all of the plaits have been released.
  4. Take a large splicing needle and insert it into the core of the rope 35cm from the lock stitch towards the lockstitch.
  5. Push the needle through the centre of the core until it emerges 1cm in front of the lock stitch where you have picked out the cover plaits.
  6. Tape the separated cover plaits together and insert through the eye of the needle. Then pull needle out of the core taking the cover with it.
  7. Once the needle has emerged from the core remove the cover from the needle and cut away the tape, then milk the core back over the cover until the cover disappears.
  8. Then take some whipping twine and whip over the join between the core and cover.

Marlowbraid Covered Eye Splice

  1. Tie knot 3 meters from end then cut off heat sealed end, pushing back outer case exposing 10cms of inner core. Holding end of case to the core, push back slack for 1 meter.
  2. Mark 'A' 30cms from end. Form eye size, mark 'B' on standing part of rope.
  3. Open cover at 'B', and pull out core, taping it with rigging tape opposite 'A'.
  4. From tape, reduce core by 50% and tape loose ends, pushing slack back to 'B' until core starts to move. Insert needle 35cms from 'B' and, taking care not to ensnare core, push needle down inside outer case until it emerges at 'A'.
  5. Thread core tail into eye of needle pull out of rope until eye has formed and end of core has emerged.
  6. Unpick and cut out 6 yarn ends 5cms from eye end of case tail. Push back some slack towards the eye ready for next stage. Insert needle 20cms from neck of the eye, emerging at 'A/B', thread cover into needle and pull down through rope.
  7. Pull tight, give the splice a good shock to bed the yarns down, and cut off ends. Finally, run a hand over cover from eye end downwards until the ends disappear inside the rope.
  8. If a thimble is required, insert while eye is being formed, before ends are pulled tight.

Doublebraid Covered Eye Splice

  1. Mark 'A' on the rope one fid length from the end. Form eye size and mark 'B' opposite 'A'. Tie a knot about 150cm from 'B'. Open cover at 'B', mark inner core with some tape and extract core using a small fid. Take out the slack from the cover by sliding your hand from the knot towards 'B'.
  2. Withdraw approx. 18cm more core from 'B' and mark this 'C' on the core. Now extract a further 12cm and mark this 'D' on the core.
  3. For ease of splicing, extract more core and make a lock using a small fid near 'B'. Feed cover end into needle eye, insert at 'C' and push through until it exits at 'D'. Remove needle and pull cover back over to hide end.
  4. Thread core end into needle, insert near 'C' and push back through until it exits at 'B'.
  5. Pull core through cover until the slack is taken up.
  6. Get the splice ('C'-'D') into cover by sliding the cover back over it until it reaches 'A'. Point 'A' and 'B' should now meet. Cut off exposed core and stretch the eye until the core disappears under the cover.
  7. You should now have a perfect Eye Splice. If you want to insert a thimble, the eye size should be calculated less the circumference of the thimble.

D12 & V12 Eye Splice

  1. Multiply the diameter of the rope by 50 and mark this measurement from the end of the rope, leave a gap for twice the required eye size and insert the fid and pull end of rope through until it reaches the mark.
  2. Then insert the fid again approximately two plaits down in the opposite direction and repeat this operation twice.
  3. Lay loose end alongside main rope and make a mark approx. 8cm from end of tail. Insert loose end into splicing fid and insert fid at the last tuck and push through the centre of the rope, to emerge at your mark.
  4. To taper the tail end, mark six successive plaits in one direction and a further six successive plaits in the opposite direction.
  5. Pull the marked plaits out of the tail end
  6. Cut the pulled out plaits off the tail end
  7. 7The slack in the main body of the rope can then be pulled down over the tail end of the rope. If necessary, for further security, a suitable whip can then be applied at the last insertion point.

D12 & V12 Adjustable / Quick Splice

  1. Multiply the diameter of the rope by 50 and mark this measurement from the end of the rope (Mark 'A'). Leave a gap for twice the required eye size and make mark 'B'.
  2. Multiply the diameter of the rope by 25 and mark this measurement as 'C'.
  3. Insert a splicing needle up inside the main body of the rope at mark 'C' and push out at mark 'B'.
  4. Feed the tail of the rope through the eye of the needle.
  5. Carefully pull the needle back down the rope until mark 'A' lines up with mark 'B'.
  6. Tie a knot in the tail end of the rope to stop the splice pulling through. To adjust either pull the knotted end or the eye whilst holding the rope between the two. For the quick splice, when adjustment is not required follow on from point 7 in D12/V12 and D2/V2 Uncovered Locking Eye Splice instructions to complete the splice.

3 Strand Eye Splice  (NOTE: all instructions to sit underneath the main picture)

  1. Unlay the end of the 3 strand rope and form an eye in an anticlockwise direction
  2. Tuck the middle (top) loose strand under the nearest strand on the standing part of the rope, against the lay of the rope
  3. Turn the rope and tuck the second loose strand under the next stand in the standing part of the rope - against the lay.
  4. Turn the rope again and tuck the final loose strand under the strand in the standing part, between the first two tucks
  5. Complete steps 2 - 4 another 4 or 5 times and then trim the ends

Multiplait Nylon to Chain for anchor warps

  1. Anchor Chain and Marlow Multiplait.
  2. Unlay the four pairs of strands for a distance equivalent in length to fifteen links of chain, and apply a strong whipping keeping the pairs crossed in the center - it is with these crossed pairs that you commence your first tuck. To help identify correctly, they will either both be plain, or they will both have a black marker thread running through - it doesn't matter which you use, as long as you tuck matching pairs (both plain or both black).
  3. Unlay each of these center pairs into single strands and tuck them through the first link of chain as shown - two strands enter the link from below and two from above.
  4. After first locking tucks, continue with one pair of strands only, keeping strands on top of the link in each tuck for five alternating links.
  5. Turn the chain over and repeat with the other pair of strands, then tie off both pairs of strands.
  6. Repeat as above with other pairs of strands and tie off as shown.
